Mid January 1968, Co. A 227th AHB has been ordered to join the rest of the Division at LZ English. Jay Dirnberger can be seen in what remains of one of the Pilots' tents as the Company area is broken down for the move north.. Mike Lane sits on the sand bag perimeter of the tent while Roland Haight carries a lounge chair from his hootch that was located behind the F.T.A. sign.

Gunship Shot Down376 viewsPat Edwards Photo

Lt Jim Puhala, WO Bob Kelly, CC Davey Armstrong, and DG Pee Pie Pierce (Med Evaced to Japan)
were in a Huey Gunship that was shot down 8 November 1967 North of Phan Thiet.
From Bob Kelly: "After shoot down - we had just reached a creek bed 50 feet away and took cover a short time before our huey blew up as shown in this picture. I was crouching and Jim as standing. The concussion from the blast knocked us both to the ground. There were three Purple Hearts awarded.

The picture shows two UH-1C gunships flown by 1st Plt. D/227th, 1st Air Cav, out of Phan Thiet. The ship in the foreground is armed with a "Thumper". It is a belt fed 40mm grenade launcher. The pod is controlled by the pilot in the left seat and traverses vertically and horizontally. It fired about 60(?) rds. per min. It was also armed with 14, 2.75 rockets, on fixed mounts, that were fired by the right seat pilot. The ship in the background was armed with a mini-gun system and rockets.

Prime Living Quarters375 viewsJim Puhala Photo

The gun platoon pilots lived in a GM Medium tent – pretty roomy quarters for a small number of occupants. Before I joined the platoon, somebody constructed this hootch. At the time this picture was taken it was occupied by 2 short-timer WO’s. Later, Platoon Leader CPT Jack Watkins moved in. When he left, I moved in.
